Queen Palm

Syagrus romanzoffiana

Light Requirement: Full sun. It performs best in open, sunny locations with regular irrigation and proper nutrition.

Height: Typically 30–50 ft. tall in Florida landscapes, with a canopy spread of about 15–25 ft.

Growth Habit: Fast-growing, single-trunk feather palm with a smooth gray trunk and long, graceful, arching green fronds. It has a tall, tropical appearance and creates quick vertical impact in the landscape.

Hardiness: USDA Zones 9b–11; moderately cold tolerant but may show damage from hard freezes; moderately drought tolerant once established, though it looks best with regular watering; low to moderate salt tolerance and is best protected from direct oceanfront salt spray.

Maintenance Info: Moderate maintenance. Queen Palms benefit from regular palm fertilizer and may show yellowing or nutrient deficiencies in poor soils. Dead fronds, flower stalks, and fruit clusters should be removed as needed to keep the palm clean and reduce mess. Avoid over-pruning, and give it room away from roofs, power lines, and tight walkways.

Best Uses in the Landscape: Best used as a tall tropical accent, driveway palm, pool-area palm, backyard shade accent, street-side planting, or larger landscape focal point. It works well where quick height and a soft tropical canopy are desired.

Plant Info: Queen Palm is native to South America, especially Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay. It became popular in Florida because of its fast growth, graceful canopy, and classic tropical look. Mature palms produce large clusters of orange fruit that can attract wildlife but may also create cleanup in high-traffic areas.
