Washingtonia Palm / Mexican Fan Palm

Scientific Name: Washingtonia robusta

Light Requirement: Full sun. It performs best in open, sunny locations with plenty of vertical space.

Height: Typically 50–80 ft. tall in Florida landscapes, with some mature specimens growing taller in ideal conditions.

Growth Habit: Fast-growing single-trunk fan palm with a tall, slender trunk and a crown of large green fan-shaped fronds. Older fronds may hang down along the trunk if not removed, creating a “skirt” effect.

Hardiness: USDA Zones 9–11; moderately cold hardy and can tolerate brief dips into the upper teens to low 20s once established, though hard freezes may damage foliage; drought tolerant once established; moderate salt tolerance, but best protected from constant direct salt spray.

Maintenance Info: Moderate to high maintenance due to height and frond management. Dead fronds may need professional removal, especially in maintained landscapes. Avoid planting near power lines, roofs, small yards, or tight spaces because of its tall mature size. Use palm fertilizer during the growing season and provide good drainage.

Best Uses in the Landscape: Best used as a tall vertical accent, commercial landscape palm, street planting, driveway row, large property feature, or skyline palm in open areas. It is not ideal for small residential spaces because it becomes very tall and narrow with age.

Plant Info: Washingtonia Palm is native to northwestern Mexico and is widely planted in warm regions for its fast growth and dramatic height. It is often used to create a classic boulevard or resort-style palm look. Its tall, slender trunk gives strong vertical impact, but it needs room to grow and professional maintenance once mature.
