Areca Palm

Dypsis lutescens

Light Requirement: Full sun to partial shade. It can grow in full sun, but often looks greener and fuller with some filtered light or afternoon shade.

Height: Typically 15–25 ft. tall in Florida landscapes, with a spread of about 8–15 ft. depending on spacing and maintenance.

Growth Habit: Fast to moderate-growing, clumping palm with multiple golden-yellow cane-like trunks and soft, arching feather-shaped fronds. It forms a dense, tropical screen when planted in rows or clusters.

Hardiness: USDA Zones 10–11; cold sensitive and may show damage from frost or freezing temperatures; moderately drought tolerant once established but looks best with regular irrigation; low to moderate salt tolerance and is best protected from direct oceanfront salt spray.

Maintenance Info: Moderate maintenance. Remove dead fronds and thin out older canes as needed to keep the planting clean and controlled. Areca Palms benefit from regular palm fertilizer and consistent watering, especially during dry periods. Avoid planting too close to structures, narrow walkways, or pool equipment because mature clumps can become wide and dense.

Best Uses in the Landscape: Excellent for privacy screening, pool cage screening, side-yard buffers, tropical backdrop planting, property-line planting, and softening fences or walls. It is one of the most popular palms for creating a lush tropical privacy screen in Florida landscapes.

Plant Info: Areca Palm is native to Madagascar and is widely used in Florida for its bright tropical look and dense clumping habit. Its yellow-green trunks and soft feather-like fronds give it a lighter, more graceful appearance than many larger palms. It is often called Butterfly Palm because the fronds curve upward and outward in a way that can resemble butterfly wings.
