We have deep local family ties to former service members as well as veterans and active-duty military, so this is not something we look at as just another seasonal promotion. We have a lot of respect for the sacrifices made by the men and women who served, and for the families who supported them along the way.Our goal for the Veterans Day event is to focus especially on retired veterans, disabled veterans, and older former service members who may benefit most from having this kind of work taken care of for them.We also want the Veterans Day version to be broader than the September giveaway.Rather than limiting it to a standard driveway size, our intention is to help where we reasonably can. That may include larger driveways, more difficult properties, or situations where a veteran could genuinely use the help. StrongSRQ’s Driveway Giveaway: No Catch, Just Us Giving Back

Some plants catch your attention because of their flowers. Others stand out because of their shape or foliage.Jatropha integerrima manages to do both.Around Sarasota, we see Jatropha integerrima used in several very different ways — as a large flowering shrub, a multi-trunk specimen, or a small tree trained to show off its branching structure. Mature plants can reach roughly 15 feet tall with a similar spread if allowed to grow freely, although landscape specimens are often maintained smaller. Jatropha Can Be Either</h3>One of the things we like most about Jatropha is how differently it can be maintained.It can grow as a dense flowering shrub, develop naturally into a broad multi-trunk specimen, or be selectively pruned into a small tree with the lower trunks exposed. UF/IFAS also notes that it can be trained as an espalier or grown in a large container.That flexibility gives it several useful landscape roles:<ul><li>Flowering specimen shrub</li><li>Small accent tree</li><li>Informal screen</li><li>Entry or patio accent</li><li>Mixed tropical planting</li><li>Large container plant in a protected setting</li></ul>The important part is deciding what form you ultimately want. Jatropha provides food for adult butterflies, but a complete butterfly-friendly landscape should also include the appropriate host plants that caterpillars depend on.<h3>Light and Flowering</h3>Jatropha can grow in full sun to partial shade, but plants grown in full sun generally produce the strongest flower display.For a homeowner choosing Jatropha primarily because of its red flowers, a sunny location is usually preferable.Partial shade can still work, but flowering may be reduced and the plant may develop a somewhat more open growth habit.<h3>Soil and Drainage</h3>Jatropha adapts to a range of Florida landscape soils as long as the site drains well.Good drainage is important because the plant does not perform well in constantly waterlogged soil. Once established, however, it develops good drought tolerance and generally does not require excessive irrigation. Newly installed plants still need consistent establishment watering while the root system develops.<h3>Cold Tolerance</h3>Jatropha is a genuinely tropical plant.UF/IFAS generally places Jatropha integerrima in USDA Zones 10B–11. Frost and freezing temperatures can damage foliage and stems, although established plants can often recover after cold damage.Here in the Sarasota area, placement can matter. Plants in warmer or somewhat protected locations may perform better during unusually cold weather.<h3>Salt Tolerance</h3>Jatropha is not considered strongly salt tolerant.For inland Sarasota landscapes, that usually is not a major limitation. Properties exposed to regular coastal salt spray may be better served by plants specifically adapted to those conditions.<h3>Pruning and Maintenance</h3>Jatropha responds very well to pruning, which is part of what makes it so versatile.Selective pruning can:<ul><li>Maintain a fuller shrub</li><li>Encourage a more open multi-trunk structure</li><li>Develop a cleaner small-tree form</li><li>Keep the plant appropriately sized around homes, walks, and other</li><li>landscape features</li></ul>UF/IFAS notes that Jatropha tolerates pruning well and can be trained into several different forms.For the best flowering display, selective pruning often works better than repeatedly shearing the plant into a rigid shape, since frequent removal of new growth can also remove developing flowers.Jatropha also produces a milky sap when cut, and that sap may irritate sensitive skin. Gloves are a good idea when pruning or handling fresh cuttings.<h3>Fertilizer</h3>Jatropha is not an especially demanding landscape plant once established.In Florida’s sandy soils, a quality slow-release landscape fertilizer can be useful during active growth when additional nutrition is needed.The goal should be healthy growth and flowering rather than forcing excessive new growth. Site conditions, foliage color, irrigation, and local fertilizer restrictions should guide how much supplemental feeding is appropriate.<h3>Toxicity</h3>One important consideration is that Jatropha should not be eaten. Parts of plants in this genus can be toxic if ingested, so placement deserves some thought where small children or pets may chew on plant material.That does not prevent Jatropha integerrima from being widely used as an ornamental landscape plant, but it is something homeowners should be aware of.<h3>Not All Jatrophas Are the Same</h3>This is where the scientific name becomes especially important.Our Featured Plant is Jatropha integerrima, which UF/IFAS currently considers not a problem species in Florida.Other Jatropha species are a different story.UF/IFAS identifies Jatropha gossypiifolia and Jatropha curcas as problematic or high-invasion-risk plants that should not be planted in Florida.Jatropha gossypiifolia — Bellyache Bush Jatropha gossypiifolia can spread aggressively by seed. Its three-lobed seed capsules dry and split open explosively, throwing seeds away from the parent plant and helping new plants establish beyond the immediate area.Reports describe seeds being projected as far as roughly 40 feet, which helps explain how a single plant can begin colonizing surrounding disturbed areas surprisingly quickly. Featured Plant: Jatropha integerrima — Colorful Flowers, Versatile Form & Those T-Rex Leaves

Photo by Strong Landscape &amp; Pressure Wash.</figcaption></figure>The Bottle Palm (Hyophorbe lagenicaulis) is one of those plants that can become a focal point without needing to be large, colorful, or heavily flowering.Its attraction is almost entirely in its form. A swollen lower trunk tapers into a much narrower upper trunk, topped by a smooth green crownshaft and a relatively compact crown of arching, feather-like fronds. The result is a palm that looks almost sculpted—and one that is easy to recognize once you know what you’re looking at.For landscapes where space is limited or a smaller specimen palm is needed, Bottle Palm can offer a very different look from many of the larger palms commonly used throughout Florida.<h3>A Small Palm With a Lot of Character</h3> Bottle Palm is a slow-growing, single-trunk palm that stays relatively compact for many years.Unlike palms that eventually dominate a landscape with a huge canopy or massive trunk, Bottle Palm works particularly well where the palm itself is intended to be seen and appreciated as an individual feature.Good locations can include:<ul><li>Entry areas</li><li>Courtyards</li><li>Pool landscapes</li><li>Tropical or tropical-modern planting beds</li><li>Patio areas</li><li>Smaller focal-point beds</li><li>Groups of several palms where space allows</li></ul>Although each Bottle Palm naturally develops a single trunk, several individual palms are commonly planted close together to create double- or triple-trunk groupings.The distinctive trunk is especially noticeable on younger and middle-aged specimens. The lower portion of the trunk becomes noticeably swollen while the upper portion remains much narrower, producing the bottle-like profile that gives the palm its common name.Even the botanical name references this feature. Full sun generally produces the strongest landscape specimen, although it can tolerate some shade.Its relatively small size also makes it useful around structures and pool areas where a homeowner wants the appearance of a palm without eventually dealing with the scale of a much larger species.Bottle Palm is moderately drought tolerant once established, but it generally performs and looks best when it receives consistent moisture during extended dry periods.<h3>Cold Is the Biggest Concern</h3>Bottle Palm is more cold-sensitive than many palms commonly planted in Southwest Florida.UF/IFAS recommends it primarily for Zone 10B, and sheltered locations in 10A may sometimes work but can be more vulnerable during unusually cold weather. Freezing temperatures can cause significant damage, so microclimate and placement are worth considering.A warmer location protected by surrounding structures or other vegetation can be a better choice than an exposed area that routinely experiences colder nighttime temperatures.Even with that cold sensitivity in mind, Bottle Palms are by no means uncommon in our area. We’ve seen many healthy, well-established specimens growing successfully here over the years, especially in warmer, protected locations.The Bottle Palms shown in several of the photographs in this article are local specimens and provide a good example of how well the species can perform in the right setting.<h3>Maintenance and Nutrition</h3>Bottle Palm is relatively low maintenance when it is planted in an appropriate location.It needs good drainage and benefits from appropriate palm nutrition. Like many palms grown in Florida’s sandy soils, Bottle Palm can develop potassium deficiency, which may first show up in older fronds as spotting, browning, or discolored margins.The palm has a crownshaft and is considered largely self-cleaning, meaning older fronds normally shed naturally rather than requiring frequent pruning.Its slow growth is both an advantage and a disadvantage. It helps Bottle Palm remain manageable in smaller landscapes, but it also means a damaged or poorly maintained palm can take a long time to replace lost growth.<h3>Designing With Bottle Palm</h3>Bottle Palm is best treated as a specimen plant rather than background filler.Because much of its appeal comes from the trunk, surrounding it with plants that completely hide the base can defeat part of the reason for choosing it. Giving the palm some visual space allows its unusual form to stand out.It can work particularly well with lower tropical foliage, flowering shrubs, stone or gravel accents, and landscapes where a clean architectural plant is needed without introducing a very large palm.Bottle Palms can also be especially attractive when two or three are planted together. When a new landscape is installed, one of the easiest mistakes to make is designing around the size of the plants today instead of the size they are going to become.A 3- to 7-gallon plant or a 15- to 25-gallon shrub or tree can still look relatively small at installation. That often makes it tempting to place plants closer together, closer to the house, or tighter against walkways, fences, pool cages, and other structures.At first, that can make a new landscape look fuller.A few years later, it can create an entirely different set of problems.<h3>Plan for the Space the Plant Will Eventually Need</h3> Container size tells you how large the plant is when you buy it. It does not tell you how much room that plant will eventually occupy in the landscape.A shrub that looks compact in a 7-gallon pot may eventually spread several feet in every direction. A young palm may fit comfortably into a narrow bed at installation but later develop a trunk, canopy, or fronds that crowd a roofline, pool cage, walkway, or neighboring plants.That is why both mature height and mature width should be considered before deciding where a plant belongs.It also means a newly installed landscape does not always need to look completely full on day one.Leaving appropriate room between plants gives them space to develop into their natural form instead of quickly growing into one another. A little open space at installation can actually be a sign that the landscape has been planned for future growth.Over time, much of that open space naturally disappears as the plants mature. object-position: undefined undefined;"></figure><h3>Mature Width Is Easy to Underestimate</h3> Homeowners naturally pay attention to how tall a plant will become, but mature width can be just as important.A plant that reaches 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide needs a very different location than a plant that reaches 8 feet tall but stays only 3 feet wide.That difference matters around:<ul><li>Walkways</li><li>Driveways</li><li>Pool cages and screen enclosures</li><li>Windows and doors</li><li>Fences</li><li>Property lines</li><li>Air-conditioning equipment</li><li>Roof overhangs</li><li>Other shrubs, palms, and trees</li></ul>Planting too close to any of these can turn routine maintenance into constant corrective pruning.<h3>What Happens When Plants Are Too Close Together?</h3> As crowded plants mature, they begin competing for space, light, and airflow.That can lead to:<ul><li>Constant trimming just to keep plants contained</li><li>Shrubs growing across sidewalks and walkways</li><li>Foliage pressing against walls or pool screens</li><li>Windows becoming blocked</li><li>Plants growing into one another</li><li>Reduced airflow through dense plantings</li><li>Uneven growth as plants compete for sunlight</li><li>More labor required to keep the landscape looking orderly</li></ul> Sometimes the problem becomes more obvious with larger palms and trees.A plant that looked perfectly reasonable when installed may eventually become completely out of scale with the area around it.<figure id="figure-ffg8ln9wt6mst8kuvr"><img id="ffg8ln9wt6mst8kuvr" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/f23GB4kPmD0JBmI2mEx6Nc8LYtX6zumZiwEodKOEjCLy9vz1jIkA4WbY36Y6VHSb.jpg" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-2xl md:rounded-3xl lg:rounded-4xl" style="aspect-ratio: 1/1; object-position: undefined% 50%;"></figure><h3>Removal Can Become Expensive</h3> Once a plant has seriously outgrown its location, correcting the problem may involve much more than trimming it back.Large shrubs, palms, and trees can develop substantial trunks and root systems, and removing them from an established landscape may require specialized equipment, additional labor, hauling, and repairs to the surrounding bed.That can turn what started as a simple spacing mistake into a much more expensive project.Good placement at installation does not eliminate every future maintenance need, but it can prevent many avoidable problems.<h3>Screening Plants Need Room Too</h3> Privacy hedges are another area where spacing is often misunderstood.Plants such as Clusia can make excellent screens, but they can also become very large when allowed to grow.That may be exactly what is wanted along a property line or around a large backyard, but the same plant can become difficult to manage when squeezed into a narrow space.The goal is not simply to ask whether a plant can create privacy.The better question is whether its mature size and growth habit fit the amount of space available.<figure id="figure-gbz4xa7e9mst8m30n"><img id="gbz4xa7e9mst8m30n" src="https://cdn.durable.co/blocks/5fTnGiq1SnoH4ZnkAsb5mXwu5bPvxWIMntoDHlSguX266zDmvkkblEt8u10zSL4h.jpg" alt="" title="" class="object-cover bg-gray-100 rounded-2xl md:rounded-3xl lg:rounded-4xl" style="aspect-ratio: 16/9; object-position: center center;"></figure><h3>Plant Spacing Is Not One-Size-Fits-All</h3> Even plants of the same species are not always used at the exact same spacing.Spacing can depend on what the landscape is trying to accomplish.For example, a shrub being used as a dense privacy hedge may be spaced differently than the same shrub used to soften an area or as an individual specimen.Other factors can include:<ul><li>Mature growth habit</li><li>Desired level of screening</li><li>Sun exposure</li><li>Irrigation</li><li>Nearby structures</li><li>Maintenance expectations</li><li>Whether the plant will be regularly pruned or allowed to grow more naturally</li></ul> This is why simply copying the spacing from another yard is not always the best approach.<h3>Think About Maintenance Before You Plant</h3> A good landscape design should not only consider what looks attractive today.It should also consider what the homeowner will need to maintain several years from now.A plant placed too close to a walkway may require frequent trimming forever. A shrub planted directly beneath a window may eventually need to be repeatedly cut below its natural height. A large palm too close to a pool cage may require increasingly difficult maintenance as it grows, and heavy fronds can eventually damage the enclosure.Selecting a plant that naturally fits the available space can often reduce those problems before they begin.<h3>Budget Can Influence Plant Size — Not Proper Spacing</h3> Project budget also plays a role in deciding what size plants to install.Using smaller starter plants can save a significant amount of money upfront, especially on larger landscape projects. The tradeoff is time: smaller plants generally need longer to establish, mature, and create the fuller look the homeowner may ultimately want.If the budget allows and a more finished appearance is desired sooner, we would typically recommend larger, more mature nursery plants rather than simply adding more plants to fill the empty space.We also usually try to strike a balance by incorporating at least a few larger specimens or focal plants into the design, even when much of the project uses smaller starter material. That gives the landscape some immediate structure and visual impact while allowing the rest of the planting to mature over time.The key is that proper spacing should still be based on the plant’s mature size.
